Removing Skunk Smell
I would like to share with fellow readers a piece of information I found to be very
helpful to me and many others.
At the back cover of a hunting magazine a few hundred issues back, was the formula for a
mix of common household ingredients to counteract the smell of skunk left on pets. I
have given it many tries it is amazing how well it works.
This was developed by a Chemist from Chicago. Mix when needed as it has short
shelf life.
For a large dog:
- 32 ounce bottle Hydrogen Peroxide
- 2 tablespoons Baking Soda
- 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap
- Work the mix to soak the pets fur thoroughly then rinse.
Even my vet was amazed when on a scedueled visit I asked if he could tell that my
labrador had been sprayed directly by a skunk the day before. He and his assistant both
sniffed..and remarked with disbelief and surprise that the smell was extremely faint.
This formula is posted on the vet's bulletin board at the entrance to their store
as it has been since that day several years ago.
Editor's Note: Hydrogen Peroxide mixed with baking soda creates a
solution that can cause problems if it is put in a sealed containor. The addition of
baking soda causes the molecules of hydrogen and oxygen to "come out of
solution". This causes a rapid expansion of the volume of the solution.
If this solution is placed in a sealed containor, the containor will eventually
explode. As long as the solution is not sealed in a containor, it will not cause an
explosion (although it may "froth" a bit).
